Sitting in the sun-or a tanning bed-is a major no-no. Make bronze from a bottle as natural as bronze from the beach with these top tips!

Take some time
Don’t apply self-tanner when you’re in a hurry. A rush job can cause streaks and spots. And definitely don’t apply the day of the prom; two or three days before is better.

Always exfoliate
Use a body scrub, loofah or plain-old washcloth to remove the top layer of dead skin cells and help self-tanner spread on more smoothly and last longer. Pay extra attention to rough areas like hands, wrists, elbows, knees, wrists, ankles and feet.

Defuzz first
Shaving gets skin even smoother than exfoliating; do it before applying self-tanner not after, which can remove some of your color.

Even it out
Rub hands together after putting tanner in your palms to spread the solution evenly in each hand.

Smooth on circular
Once self-tanner starts soaking into skin, use circular motions to spread it around; different directions help blend better than linear lines.

Work your way up
Doing your upper body first can cause streaks or spots when bending over to apply to your lower body. Start with your feet and legs and work your way up.

Follow the sun’s lead
When self-tanning your face, apply where sun would hit naturally-nose, cheeks, middle of the chin and forehead-then blend by moving toward your hairline.

Practice patience
Wait eight hours after tanning before putting on lotion, showering, sweating or wearing tight-fitting clothes. Wait three hours before applying makeup.

Extra Credit: Use lots and lots of lotion!
After the eight-hour mark, moisturize skin like mad! Self tanner is dehydrating so lots of lotion will make color last a lot longer!

Moisturize smart
Moisturizer prevents self-tanner from soaking into skin; use it only on areas you don’t want to get unnaturally tan like heels, ankles, tops of toes, knee caps and elbows.

Go with gloves
Orange palms are a dead giveaway that our tan isn’t natural. Snug, disposable drugstore gloves can help keep palms clear.

With more and more of us understanding the serious consequences
of suntanning, we are looking for alternatives. One of the most
interesting and improved alternatives is to get a spray tan.

Do any of you remember the first self tanners that hit the
shelves many years ago – wella you became instant orange. Well
we’ve come along way babe! The hottest thing to hit the beauty
seen is “spray tanning.” You really need to check out what’s
available these days!

Spray tan in a can is the latest in sunless tanning technology.
Forget lotions or pump sprays that leave uneven tones. Although
lotions have come along way from the carrot orange days, some
can still leave you with orange under tones. Aerosol tanning
sprays can leave you with a perfect looking, no hassle, even
tan. Spray tan in a can is the safest, easiest way to get a
perfect sunless tan at home! No more harmful UV rays or trips to
the tanning bed.

You will want to find a reputable shop. Ask around, word of
mouth is always a good way to find out what salon does the best
spray tanning. Once you’ve chosen a salon book your appointment.
If your planning to have a spray tan for a special event, say
like your wedding, then I would suggest a trial run about a
month prior. If you like the results you can book again, if you
don’t then I suggest trying another salon.

On the day of your appointment shower and exfoliate. Use a
loofah and shower gel and body scrub to remove all your dry/dead
skin. This will ensure an even application.

At the salon they will give you instructions, often these
instructions are in the form of the video. The whole procedure
and what you need to do will be explained to you.. Some
important things to remember: 1. hold your breath when the spray
is going off (for about 14 seconds and its very challenging)

2. follow the instructions “exactly” as to where to apply the
lotion to block the spray on your feet and hands. You need to
block the spray from your hands and feet because these areas
have excess wrinkles and creases, so if they are sprayed you
will get a tell-tale white veiny looking areas in the creases.

3. when the spray stops you need to turn around

4. when you leave the spray booth you will be given towels to
wipe down and remove any excess spray. Make sure you wipe not
blot.

The color from your spray tan will last anywhere from 7-10 days.
The treatments are still a bit on the pricey side at around
$40.00 a treatment, so this isn’t something you get done on a
regular basis, more like a treat or for a special occasion. Some
companies sell packages that give you a reduced rate.

It is important to apply plenty of moisturizer on a regular
basis to the extent the life of your Spray on Sun Tan. If you
have very dry skin use a deep moisturizer. Blend any moisturizer
into the skin and do not wipe it off as this will remove some of
your spray tan. Baths, spas and swimming in chlorinated pools
will reduce the life of your tan.

Tips for spray tanning… 1. All the spray tanning in the world
will do you no good if it attaches itself to dead skin that is
about to come off your body so be sure to Exfoliate! Use a
loofah sponge in the bath the night before you spray tan session
to remove these dead skin cells.

2. Choose your clothes carefully. Pick clothes that cover all
the parts of your body you won’t be tanning. Select tight
fitting clothes so that the tan spray cannot go under your
sleeves. Choose dark colored clothes, since spray tanners will
stain clothing.

3. Follow the instructions! Provided by the Salon. Self-tanning
booths typically have a handout, so read up, and make sure you
know what to do!

4. For 30-60 seconds after a self-tanning booth application you
need to Stand still. This will ensure that your tan dries
evenly. Although it does take longer than 30 seconds for your
spray tan to dry completely, the first minute or more is when
you run a real risk of rubbing off the self-tanner before it has
a chance to work.

5. After your spray tan application you will need to Blot your
skin with a towel to catch any drips. 6. Because your feet
normally get less sun than the rest of you, your feet are paler
and may get dark faster, so it is important to Protect your
feet. If you are spraying yourself, go lightly on the feet. If
you are using a salon use the paper booties that are provided to
protect your feet. You can later apply a self tanner to your
feet to give them the appropriate amount of color.

If you’ve got a special event coming up, perhaps a wedding,
prom, or a re-union, spray tanning might be something you’ll
want to try. When done correctly it results in a very natural
looking tan adding summer color to your pale winter skin.

Have you noticed how people these days prefer a tan? Alright, that may sound like the understatement of the century. The real fact is that a majority of our population seems to wish for a tan year-round. I can’t figure out what is it about that golden brown skin? It all started back in the 1920’s when Coco Chanel had returned from her vacation; it seemed like every person craved for tropical skin. Surely this craze hasn’t faded since then. In fact the tan is as big of an epidemic as it ever was. Both adults as well as teenagers yearn for that golden glow complexion. Unfortunately tanning is not exactly healthy anymore. Well, to be more specific, it never was healthy. But sure we all know about it now. For there is an up-side to this situation. With the innovation of new technology came the plethora of self tanners. Its true; you can simply go out and buy a lotion to coat all over your body and achieve that beautiful golden brown skin. Are you still basking in the sun?

Folks, what do you know about self tanners? Alright, let me go ahead and guess. One can find them at the local drug stores, in fact they often smell funky and leave behind orange streaks. Now does this all sound familiar?

Well I personally would suggest you to take a second look especially for those of you who may have deemed self tanners inferior to the real deal. For sure, the sun is bad all the way around. This not only may lead to skin cancer but it is also the main cause of premature aging, hence leathery skin. You may want to consider self tanners, unless you want a lot of skin damage and dry wrinkled complexion.

Oh, and I almost forgot to reveal the ever popular, ever innovative tanning bed. At first they thought that this would be a safe way to tan, but soon realized that the rays were not only harmful, but maybe worse than the sun’s. Now these babies are now known as cancer boxes, which the nick name in itself is enough to put off anyone.

If you are still craving at that tropical tan or light glow, then you may want to take a new look at self tanners. For sure things have changed! Today there are not only different options available, but you can even have the self tanners applied professionally to avoid streaking. What’s more, there are a couple of new body lotions out that offer a healthy glow. In fact this new product seems to be doing quite well. My wife tried it and she has a nice light tan with no streaks. Hop online and check out a couple of these new-age self tanners. Get that skin tone you have always longed for, but do it the safe way!

I have a few questions about self tanning lotion.

1. Will you get any lighter if you use it every other day instead of everyday?

2. If you accidentally put more on in one place will you be darker in that place?

3. How does it work?

You don’t have to answer the ones you don’t know. Thanks

There are different kinds of self tanners. There are pure self tanners that you either rub on or spray once, and it lasts for about a week and then rubs off. I don’t recommend applying a self tanner every day. Once a week at max. And yes, if you accidentally put more on in one area, it will show darker. It works because they are chemicals that stain skin. Kind of like Iodine. I find more self tanners to look more orange than not, but "Salon Bronze" gun and spray has worked the best for me without looking orange.

There are also regular lotions that have a hint of tanner in them. Jergens has a pretty good one. You can apply these kinds of lotions every day, but I recommend every other day because as the chemicals build up on top of your skin, it may get too thick and rub off and then you’ll look spotty. You will not get lighter if you do it every other day. You’ll maintain your color but steadily add darkness. And no, lotions are pretty blendable so you don’t have to worry about having darker spots if you add too much. The tanner is pretty subtle.

I hope you find this helpful.

When using tanning beds properly it will give you a natural look to your wintry pale skin. When exposed to UVB rays it will stimulate and produce skin pigment called is melanin which makes your skin turn dark. Any type of exposure to UVB rays is not good; if you are exposed for any amount of time you will need to have some type of protection. If you have a family history of skin cancer, its all the more reason to take extra cautions. Some older tanning beds use the older style of lamps, these lamps emit UV A rays which is not good for your skin. There have been reports that UV A radiation has been know to cause cancer of the skin. It has been reported that skin cancer is on the rise, with the ozone depleting and the popularity of tanning beds.

Today, devices that emit a combination of UVA and UVB are predominantly used. If you expose your skin to UV rays many different types of complications can occur, you could get skin rashes, skin will age you might get skin cancer. Exposure to UVB can cause skin burning; the best protection against this is to cover up your skin. 99% of the sun’s UV radiation at sea level is UVA. The UV that is dangerous to your skin is the UVB; this is the rays that can cause aging, blotches, wrinkles and even cancer. It is the UVA and UVB rays that are the most harmful to our skin. UVB is easier to protect against than UVA, but both cause very real damage.

When exposing your skin to UV rays it is very possible it will cause premature spots, blemishes, aging and maybe skin cancer. Using a bit of precaution such as purchasing a good tanning lotion or attending one of your local sunless tanning salons is a good first step to protecting yourself. Tanning beds have become very popular because everyone wants a natural looking tan, many people have been purchasing home beds to tan themselves.

When tanning lotions first came out on the market they made everyone look orange, today they improved this and now people look like they really have a tan. Today the self tanners come in many shades, since everyone does not have the same skin pigment it is easier to match your skin type. When using tanning sprays or self tanners the color does not last very long, on average it lasts about 5 to 7 days. Getting a tan without the sun has becoming very popular because it reduces the risks of getting skin diseases. Tanning sprays have become more advanced since they were developed, they protect your skin against the sun and give you a tan without needing the sun, and some even have moistures in them to enrich your skin.

One of the drawbacks of these tanning lotions that dye your skin is that they do not last very long and you need to keep applying it to keep the color constant. The reason for this is because your skin continuously sheds old skin and replenishes your body with new skin so you will loose the color from the tanner. Also, you should test the tanner on a hidden part of your body before applying it over all of your skin.

The market for tanning bed lotions has enjoyed a profitable run with the continuous popularity of suntan beds and other indoor tanning equipment. These lotions are formulated to help consumers who use tanning beds get an even, deep tan. Lotions used with sunbeds are different from ordinary tanning lotions commonly used in beach tanning. They are also different from self tanning formulas or sunless tanning creams which do not require the use of sunbeds or any form of UV-emitting devices.

Tanning bed lotions are milder compared with traditional suntan lotions. Since these products are used indoors, manufacturers do not have to worry about the effect of wind, sand and sun on the products’ ability to get absorbed by the skin. Unlike regular suntan lotions where the level of SPF depends on the type of skin of the user, the SPF levels of lotions for sunbeds are formulated depending on the type of tanning bed for which they will be used. Some of the better known brands of lotions for tanning beds are California Tan, Body Invest, HP2000, Designer Skin, Australian Gold, John Abate, Hoss Sauce, Supre, Body Drench, Wicked Rays and others.

Aside from sunbed lotions, there are also tanning creams that can be used for indoor tanning without the help of tanning beds. These products are called sunless tanning creams or self tanning lotions. The products facilitate the tanning process without any need for ultraviolet ray exposure. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, self tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone or DHA as their active ingredient are the most effective. Sunless tanning products are non-toxic and are generally considered as safe compared with tanning methods that involve UV exposure. Tan acquired through the use of these products, though, can last for only three to ten days. Medical experts have also warned that DHA may cause contact dermatitis and first time users should first apply DHA-based products in a small patch of skin and wait for 24 hours to observe their effect before applying them on the whole body.

Sunbed lotions and sunless tanning products can be used at home but are also available as special services in salons and other indoor tanning establishments. To produce the best results, the skin should be cleaned and dried before a full body application. Users should avoid swimming and bathing before the lotions are fully absorbed by the body which could take from one to six hours.

Tanning bed lotions and self tanning products offer the advantage of helping consumers acquire a tan without leaving the privacy of their homes or going outside in the sun. But like other indoor tanning supplies, these creams and lotions should be used after a thorough discussion with a dermatologist.
