setting up a beauty salon?

Hi,

I’ve found a former hairdressing shop which i’m thinking of buying the girls who currently work there want to stay, I have no expierence in the beauty industry so to me this is ideal

However in addition to the hairdressing there is planning around the back to convert the garage into more floor space and i was thinking of offering sunbeds, nail bar , beauty treatments like body wraps, massages etc…

Ive looked on the net and found i can take a nail course (1 day course) and have a certificate and able to get liability insurance i havent got a clue when it comes to nails so any advice would be much apperchiated.

As for sunbeds i’m only wanting 1 to start off with do i need any qualifications or training to have one in my shop? Same applies for spray tanning.

does anyone know any home courses i could do too on beauty college is a bit of a nusicance for me as i run a car business also!!

I would go careful on the sunbeds – you will find that most beauty salon insurance products will exclude liability arising from their use. Suggest you make enquiries as to what liability is and isn’t covered – especially ‘treatment risk’ – where there are specific restrictions regarding experience.

what can i do to land the job?

i am currently looking for new employment, the problem is that i am only 20 and have had quite a few jobs the past two years. my first job, which i started in high school, i worked at for two years, i then quit because i had plans to move away to college but when i decided not to go, i went back to work with the same employer. after a few more months there, i quit and went to work for someplace else. as it turns out, i absolutely hated this new job. it wasnt the actual work that i didnt enjoy, it was the fact that the general manager and i did not get along at all. he always made me feel uncomfortable and i felt like he singled me out, so after only three short months i quit and went to work for another new place. again, the manager there and i did not get along. ive neve had a dispute with my superior at any job, it was just more or less them talking to me in a way that made me feel stupid and like they were never satisfied. the fact is, that everyone had the same problems with these managers so it wasnt just me.after working six months at this new job, i went back to my very first job and worked there for eight months. i then got bored working there and quit to go work at a new place. i loved my job there! everyone was fun and nice and all of my managers were awesome but it was a little drive from where i lived and i got paid in peanuts. so, i guess what im asking is what do i tell an employer that i am hoping will hire me about my job history? i dont want them to think i am not dependable or cant hold a job for too long. also, the jobs ive held are as follows, knowing this might help you to better offer me advice, in the following order..1)pizza place 2) the gap 3)pizza hut 4)pizza place 5)applebees.as of current i am working at burger king. i am still in my first week there but as soon as i find a better job i am quitting there. i only took the position as a last resort. all of the jobs that i have held are jobs that i have quit, not been fired from. the job i am currently applying for is at a tanning salon, basically just working the front desk and cleaning beds. i know that none of these jobs sound tough or challenging but its even hard to find a job a company that isnt fortune 500. employers are becoming more and more picky. also, i am going to school to get my associates degree in business management if that will help to help me. i would also like to know what i should tell them when they ask why i left a certain job.the reason i left two of those jobs was because the managers made me feel uncomfortable and not like an asset to the team. i dont want to say anything negative though but i also dont want to lie! i am DESPERATE for a job right now as are most in todays economy so any and all advice and tips you could offer me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! thank you!

You will run the show and you will not be bored.

This takes time and experience. Perhaps you can take this time to learn how not to run a business or what type of people not to hire.

Gift for friend opening salon?

I have a friend that is planning to open her own salon soon (hair, nails, tanning, etc.) What’s a nice, useful gift for her new business?

A bouquet of flowers or an indoor plant would be lovely unless she’s arranging her own for the opening.

Does she have a large coffee plunger or a dripolator which keeps a jug of coffee hot? Some really nice coffee mugs could be useful, as well.

If she has a digital camera, she may appreciate a memory stick for it. She will want to take photos of some of the styles she creates.

You could buy some of her gift certificates and use them as Christmas gifts for your friends.

are tanning salons profitable?

I was thinking about buying a tanning salon that is for sale for about 30k and I was wondering do tanning salons make good profit? I plan on turning the place into half nails and half tanning. I was also wondering why alot of people are selling their tanning salons. Is there something I need to know about the tanning business that people are trying to get rid of?

You should have an in-depth knowledge of any business you want to open, otherwise you are certain to be hitting speedbump after speedbump, and come into so many unforseeable things. I recommend you open a business you know something about.

Also take a look at the tanning salons financial records. such as cashflow statement, assets/liabilities, and all that stuff.

(I am trying to take over ownership of a tanning salon & need to take out a $37,000 loan) any tips for writing a good proposal would be great!

-Taking the salon over now during the busiest few months would be a good way for me to build a financial stepping stone. I’m young and upbeat and feel that I have the potential and drive to make this business grow and branch out in so many directions. I have big dreams and plans for success when I take over the salon. I am going to add other services using the extra floor space, including a fitness area where clients can combine working out and tanning in one setting!

If you want to impress the bankers, then I would show them how historic revenues, variable/fixed expenses, and cash flows in the salon are stable. Then, you should find evidence of what drives those revenues in your market (perhaps there is a correlation of tanning to a certain population of single women or men between a certain age group or proximity to a college, etc.), and show how those drivers are at least forecasted to remain constant or hopefully grow in your favor. Then, show who your competition is and how you differentiate from them…what your unique selling proposition is (perhaps fitness – though I will touch on that in a sec). The bankers are not risk takers, they are not entrepreneurs. They want to feel safe and know their loan is safe. Therefore, they want to konw you have thought ahead of the risks you are going to take on and know you have a plan for mitigating them. OK, now you mentioned that you are going to add exercise equipment. Don’t. Unless you have enough space (and money) to fully equip a gym, then don’t do it. It is much easier for a gym to add two rooms with tanning beds than the other way around. Don’t go head-on in competing with them. Instead, find something unique. Perhaps, you could partner with a few travel agencies to give specials to people who booked vacations in sunny spots with them (to help them get a base before going), or partner with a local gym that doesn’t have tanning beds by having a small competition sponsored to its members, or use that extra space to put in a spray-tan booth. I’m not saying your idea is bad with workout equipment (have not seen your space, don’t know your market or clientele, etc.) but my point is to let the banker know that you are someone who is not going to gamble their money and that you aren’t afraid to talk to them about realistic challenges that lay ahead and how yo uwill solve them by interally driving down costs and externally differentiating your salan.
OK, the advice might suck, but it’s free. This is what consultants do when they get home bored;)

Owning my own business…?

This may sound crazy, I don’t know, but I just got out of highschool and am looking to get a business degree and hopefully open my own business. I’m planning on owning a tanning salon/gym. My questions are:
1) How would I go about opening a business (with a fairly large amount of space)? How would I get loans/investors?
2) How much money can I make off of it?

I’m looking in to starting my own business myself right now, and I’ve bought this package from Waterstones labelled ‘Your evening class – starting a small business’ by teach yourself company. It’s great because it has audio (if your not a big fan of reading huge books), it breaks it down for you, and you go through workbooks to put your idea together and learn what you need to know. There is also a book with more detail but it’s only small. It’s a great package which I would recommend to you as it covers all kinds of business’.

Also I’d recommend (the most important thing) looking into the business market around your idea, to see who your competitors are, and what you’d need to make yours better and selable, but also if there’s an open market for your idea because you don’t want to put everything and all your money into this business and have it flop, so be very vigilant on your market research. If you plan it fully, and put everything into it, researching and putting it together it should result in a successful business, and as you know business’ can make a lot of money! Especially the gym/beauty business’ there’s a huge demographic you can reach with that business, I mean think of how much places like JJB’s must be making! However don’t forget there’s an economic crisis still lurking so best plan for a few years and wait until the economy is improved so your not going to loose out on money. Good luck

How do you figure what your income will be when you open a business?

I own a tanning salon and I am opening a 2nd location, I know the population within a 7 mile radius and I know how many fall into the catagory of tanning but how would you figure your projected income for a business plan?

There is no easy answer for this. It will all depend on your marketing, pricing, advertising and a whole gamut of business.
The best way is not to figure out net income. There are too many unknown variables for net income. It would be better to figure out your break even piont. This means how many customers needs to go to your shop everyday for you to pay for overhead expenses. Take all your FIXED monthly expenses. Dont forget loans you have to pay. Divide by number of days open. Then for each service you provide figure out what is the cost without your FIXED expense. You can derive how many people that needs to go to your shop every day.

I am a single male, 25 years old and my income at my current job is roughly $30,000 per year. I have over $10,000 cash saved up to help me start a business. I am interested in opening a spray tan salon or possibly a storage unit business. I have educated myself on both of those businesses however, what should I do next? In order for me to open the spray tan business, it would cost in the area of $100,000. Other than draw up a business plan (which I have), what would be my next step or steps? thanks for any help.
