NO, you just need to know how to run & market a business (take some classes at the community college); however, I can’t see how opening this franchise in this economy would be smart.

Hi there,

I’m trying to think of a new business scenario which I can use for my Business A Levels.

The aim of the project is to manage your own business in a certain location.

And having researched the location, I concluded that mostly elderly people lived there. And businesses like:

- Tanning Salons
- Barbers
- Franchises (Sainsburys, Boots & WHSmith)
- Restaurants
- Butchers
- Estate Agents
- Off License shops
- Funeral service
- Car Hire Service
- Betting Shops
- Clothes Shops

… Have already been taken, and I’m struggling to think of new businesses which would interest elderly people.

Any ideas?

telecommunications- they can build a simple business by collaborating with a corporation and run their business out of their homes on the phone refering people over to the industry on services they’re most likely already using and paying for anyway. Saving people money on their local and long distance telephone services, Interenet services, voip, digital, video phones, cellular phones and plans, through all the major cellular phone providers as well as Satellite TV. Products that are high in demand and everyone uses every day.

no you don’t need a degree to own a franchise but it does help with running the franchise.. be careful before you own because franchises make you sign a big contract and have a lot of control over your business..

Places with a REAL ESTATE FRANCHISING section..?

on their website. I have a building and I need tenets. Its like a strip center. And then there's one free standing one that is available for one tenet. They arent getting rented And money is being lost, so I really need to find some tenets. I've emailed subway, but they havent gotten back to me. Its in Michigan. I need stuff like pizza places, subway kinda stuff, coffee stuff (no drive thru though), hair salons, tanning, maybe like tax services. the problem is that i can't find any real estate sections under their franchising section on their website for me to suggest my building. Can anyone find some places for me?

I found a spot one time for a fastenal store. I drove around and looked for "for rent" signs. I wasn't too high tech, but I was the decision maker. Now I'm in RE. I never overestimate the value of strategic marketing.

Jump on the franchise band wagon? I was thinking of a tanning salon. I know someone personally who owned a tanning business. It was their own they built from the ground up but due to a large amount of overhead their company went under. I just know that I could have ran their business and made a profit. Maybe not to make me the Donald Trump of tanning salons but I have enough business sense to keep a budget (something they didn't do) and concentrate on just TANNING (they were selling crap that didn't even pertain to tanning). I know as a tanning client, the only services I want in my tanning salon are 1) tanning, 2) tanning lotions for purchase, and 3) someone knowledgeable to answer any questions I may have about tanning. So best to build my own or go with a franchise??? Pro's…Con's??? Thankfully my husband is a man of GREAT business sense so I think I'm covered on that end.

When a business running into the ground. you have to evaulate the WHY.
IF they have high overhead,then you have to know why. Are they hiring too many people? or they are wasting the resources?
The reason they sell other stuff, maybe because they need those things to make profit.
Are they doing good marketing? If not, then is it the reason the business is bad?
Customer service is another issue, are they hiring the right person?
It is always cheaper to get the business turn-key, everything is there, so you can open the door and start business. But you have to do some marketing studies.

For example, if you are in southern california, and it is cheaper to go outside to get tan, then go to a tanning salon. Of course, the business will go belly up.

Maybe you can add in someone who does nails, so two person can hang out there, one do the tan, and other do the nail….

I want to own my own winery or boutique sometime or tanning salon or bar. Sounds realy fun-just wondering if ya have to go to college to own your own business? My boyfirends mom has own her video and tanning salon for 20 something yrs and has not gone to college. And it is doing very well, she is now thinking about putting an airbrush system is there! Please help..Also I'm curious about how do you make your business into a franchise?

Steps to starting your own business: sba.gov
People go to college so they understand business principles to run a successful business, e.g. marketing, finance, etc. The first thing you need to do is a business plan. Contact a SCORE counselor (see sba.gov page) near you to assist. Most new businesses fail because they fail to comply with regulations….and most fail after one year. Good luck!

By "ground up" I mean leasing a building, getting the building with different rooms with doors, sound system, buying the beds, lotions, etc. I'd like mature answers from other business/franchise owners.

I am the manager of a tanning salon franchise but am relatively new to the industry (I was promoted after 2 months in the corporation). My owner has sort of lost interest in his store and has pretty much left me and my two girls on our own. Being a franchised store off of a corporation we're separated from all the other stores and my resources are limited.
We walked into this knowing business was slow so we're fighting to get the store back to it's glory days. I was wondering if anyone had an resources for sales training and/or simple small business marketing techniques or tips.

Your a pretty smart person asking for help as most people think they can wing it in sales. First don't let anyone tell you that only sales people are born. You can learn and apply everything.
I'm going to suggest you pick up a book or go to the library on a book by TOM HOPKINS he's a real estate agent but he's sales training works for everything. Please read the book several times as it may not sink in right away. Good luck and try applying what you learn it will work when you become confident it does.
